LONDON PROGRAMME

Notre Dame’s London Law Programme is the only full-year ABA-approved study abroad program offered by an American law school. If you choose to go to London (and are serious about having an international legal career someday), make the most of this opportunity by gaining some invaluable international experience. Here are some ideas from what students have done in the past:

Internships
Law-related internships can earn 1-2 class credits. Past ND London students have worked at the U.S. Embassy, the House of Lords, the Northern Ireland Commission, Amnesty International, as well as various Human Rights NGOs. If you don’t want to commit the time and earn class credit—Volunteer!

Locating an Internship requires NETWORKING! Email ND London Alumni, 3Ls and Professors back in South Bend — You’d be amazed at the contacts you’ll get. Also, talk with your London Professors about ideas they may have. Finally, the ND London Undergraduates have an internship coordinator — get their name and ask for advice.

Directed Readings
If you can’t fill your schedule with enough courses that match your personal interests — design a Directed Reading (1-2 Credits) that allows you to explore unique international legal issues. Pick your topic and an Advisor — then look around to independent or Online Journals to see if you can get published.

Moot Court
Take the opportunity to try out — If you make the team, its worth all the effort down the road. The Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is one of the largest law school competitions in the world. The ND London team initially competes in the UK Regional Competition against other UK schools and before international scholars and legal practitioners. Check out the ILSA website for more information.

Language Skills
London is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world — Don’t waste this opportunity to practice your languages skills, or to start from scratch with something new. If you have the resources, consider hiring a Tutor ... Or just practice as often as you can with a new friend over a pint at the local Pub.

Journal & Law Review Notes
When writing your Note for an ND Journal or Law Review—Pick a topic you can uniquely research in London. Make use of the Professors, Universities and Libraries you wouldn’t be able to tap into back in South Bend.
