The Simulation
Our simulation was originally designed to train practicing managers by Carnegie-Mellon's Graduate School of Industrial Administration. You will need a copy of the student manual (titled "Micromatic" and available in the ND Bookstore) in order to prepare for the simulation; the manual includes past operating statements and presents definitions of reports you will encounter. You will be combined with a few other students into the management team for a single company; your student colleagues will be assigned to other corporations in the same industry. Because every company is in the same industry, the decisions your management team makes will affect the entire market and every other team in that market.
An Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) program will allow your management team to query your corporate database and collect information you will need for strategy formation, long range planning, high level resource planning, master scheduling, and detailed capacity planning.

Student Teams
Student teams (each of which comprises one single company) will be assigned by the instructor. The teams are listed here.

Simulation Introduction
The Micromatic Simulation we use is a realistic representation of a mythical industry. Each of the student-run companies is in the same industry as every other student-run company. To begin, each company is in the same financial and physical position. Once the simulation begins enormous amounts of data are available to the student-run companies from the corporate ERP system. You may review the types of information available to you by paging through the Micromatic Introduction.

Simulation Scoring
Our simulation will take a very realistic approach to scoring. Real world management teams are often evaluated on performance; we will use a particular set of rules to evaluate our student-run companies. Each year Business Week magazine ranks the management teams of top companies using a weighted average of a number of variables. We will use this weighted average to compute a quarter-by-quarter score and ranking and also to provide end-of-game results for the entire simulation experience. It is important for each member of the management team to understand the exact measures whch will be used for evaluation. An explanation of these measures is found here.

Technological Improvements
Technological improvements are allowed to be made to plants at a time determined by the game administrator. Do not attemp to purchase these improvements until allowed by the game administrator. The possible technological improvement options for these improvements may, however, be examined: See Technological Improvements.
