INCS is an international group of scholars dedicated
to interdisciplinary discussion and research. The organization
sponsors annual meetings and enjoys a collaborative relationship
with Nineteenth-Century Contexts: An Interdisciplinary Journal.
INCS encourages scholarly work that transcends disciplinary boundaries
in its approach to cultural studies.
Membership in INCS includes a subscription to Nineteenth-Century
Contexts.
Interdisciplinary, international, and innovative, Nineteenth-Century
Contexts is transcending boundaries in pursuit of revisionary
approaches to cultural studies.
Recent conferences have been held at the University of California
at Santa Cruz, Yale University, Ohio State University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Oregon, James Madison University, the University of Iowa, and Louisiana State University. We have also sponsored or co-sponsored international conferences in London and Paris.
Dialogue is the featured mode of exchange at INCS meetings. Papers
are distributed in advance, while at the conference session presenters
summarize their papers to stimulate dialogue among all those in
attendance.
Recent conference themes include Impurities, Nineteenth-Century Sex, Nineteenth-Century Worlds, Serious Pleasures, Death and Life, Exhibitions/Cultures,
The Nineteenth-Century City: Global Contexts, Local Productions,
Colonialism at Home and Abroad, Re-Thinking Family Values, and
Borders of Culture: Margins of Identity. Conference papers and
Nineteenth-Century Contexts articles exemplify the exchange of
knowledge and method among academic disciplines that is promoted
by INCS.
