Call for Papers

Paper or panel proposals are invited on any aspect of the construction of "worlds" (cultural, epistemological, scientific, discursive, geopolitical) in the nineteenth century. INCS is an association of scholars in History, Women's Studies, Art History, Anthropology, Science Studies, Philosophy, various literatures, and other disciplines devoted to the interdisciplinary exploration of nineteenth-century culture and its relation to our contemporary world. This conference particularly aims to bring together an international assembly of such scholars. Possible proposal topics include but are not limited to:

  • histories of the world
  • astronomical worlds
  • population migrations
  • psychology and mental worlds

  • partitioned worlds

Discussions and paper presentations will be in English.

Longer versions of INCS papers are regularly published in the affiliated journal, Nineteenth-Century Contexts: An Interdisciplinary Journal.

Send 200-400 word words abstracts by November 1, 2002 to London.INCS.2@nd.edu. Notifications of acceptance will be mailed electronically in December 2002. Sessions at the conference are devoted to discussion following 5-7 minute presentations. Complete papers are available in advance at the password protected section of the conference website, currently under construction.
