Raiders of the Lost Ark Critical Evaluations

For many people the film Raiders of the Lost Ark provides an entertaining view of the practice of archaeology. For this assignment students will be responsible for viewing and critiquing the film Raiders of the Lost Ark. As part of this students will be required to address the following questions. In what ways is the movie consistent, or inconsistent with the goals, methods, and practice of mainstream archaeology as exemplified by university and museum research? In what ways does this film further expand traditional interpretations of archaeology? In what ways does it challenge and expand upon the public's understanding of archaeology? How does it stereotype archaeology as a profession, archaeologists as individuals, and archaeological research? In this light, what are the positive and negative aspects to this film? After viewing the film, and determining group membership, student groups will be required to develop a two page, single-spaced, overview of the film from the perspective of what does this tell us about the view of the general public about the practice of archaeology. This work must provide concrete examples, draw upon four examples beyond the class textbook and follow the referencing system employed in this class. Student groups will be responsible for posting their essays on the Myths and Facts web page.
