ICL and Theology Department Awarded Grant for Liturgical Music
The Theology Department has been awarded a grant of $69,981 from the Wabash Center for "Teaching Theology through Music: Conveying Theological Concepts through the Music of the Church." The project is directed by John Cavadini, Chair of the Theology Department and Director of the Institute for Church Life, and Charlotte Kroeker, Director of Church Music Initiatives in the Institute for Church Life.
The two week seminar will be held May 23- June 4, 2004 for twenty faculty participants, ten theologians and ten musicians, who will receive a stipend, room and board. The seminar will be held at Oakwood Retreat and Conference Center in Syracuse , Indiana , and on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Participants will work with presenters who will bring expertise to each of the masterworks/genres of music, including J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor, G.F. Handel's Messiah, hymnody, a chamber work based on C.S. Lewis's Four Loves, ethnic music of Africa and Asia, and African-American spirituals and gospel music. Format will include performances, lectures, discussion and study of pedagogy for each genre.
