Sources of Music Used in the Sunday Basilica Mass

Each Sunday, the University of Notre Dame makes the Sunday Mass available via a live video stream at http://basilica.nd.edu/. The 10 a.m. Mass currently is being streamed, and, during the academic year, the 11:45 a.m. Mass will be streamed live. Both also are available for download.

As a guide for listeners, and as a help to those planning music in parishes, Dr. Gail Walton and Dr. Andrew McShane offer the schedule of music for the masses. Sources for the music are listed at the end of the schedule.

Resources for the Parish Pianist

Though organ is often the preferred instrument to accompany liturgy, a piano is found in many churches. Pianos provide versatility for many styles of liturgical music, and may be a good alternative when the cost of a fine organ is prohibitive. Because the piano, in contrast to the organ, has not been historically associated with the church, performance practice is not as well developed, and literature is not as readily available. Dr. Kroeker addresses piano performance practice, and suggests appropriate piano literature, as a resource to those who might use the piano to accompany liturgy.

Resources for the Parish Organist

Dr. Craig Cramer, Professor of Organ at the University of Notre Dame, regularly reviews organ literature for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). His reviews have appeared in Pastoral Music and Pastoral Music Notebook. The descriptions that follow are a result of over 20 years of reviewing much of the new liturgical organ music as it was published. Dr. Cramer and NPM have graciously allowed the posting of these reviews for reference purposes, and as an aid to parish musicians who are seeking repertoire for organ.

Dr. Gail Walton, Director of Music at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame, has compiled a list of additional organ publications.
