Course Objectives

The main goals of this course are outlined broadly below:

  1. Appreciate limits of lumped-element circuit designs and analysis
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in distributed circuit design by analytical, graphical, and computer-aided methods
    • Impedance matching concepts, design of matching networks
    • Single-stub tuner, quarter-wave transformer, double-stub tuner
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in analyzing non-linear properties of microwave circuits
    • Gain compression
    • Intermodulation effects
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in analyzing noise in electrical systems
    • Effective noise temperature
    • Noise factor, noise figure
  5. Successfully design, analyze, fabricate, and test working microstrip-based circuit
    • Properties to be measured and/or analyzed
      • Frequency response
      • Input and output return loss/match
      • Stability (for amplifiers)
      • Gain compression, intermodulation
      • Noise figure
  6. System analysis using measured circuit performance data
