Financial Aid
Students admitted to the Notre Dame HPS program are normally
offered a five-year package of financial support in the
form of a fellowship/assistantship that includes a full
tuition scholarship. This provides a duty-free fellowship
for the first year, with services expected for stipend continuation
in the second, third, and fourth years. A fifth-year dissertation
fellowship is awarded to students making satisfactory progress
toward the degree. Duties will normally include teaching
assistantship work in the selected disciplinary department
(e.g., History or Philosophy), the undergraduate Science,
Technology, and Values Program, or the Program of Liberal
Studies. In some cases, a student will be assigned as a
Research Assistant to a faculty member.
For the 2005-2006 academic year, fellowships and assistantships
(9-month) will carry a stipend of $15,000. A limited number
of summer fellowships are available. Incoming students are
also eligible for the competitive university-wide Presidential
Fellowships (12-month), which will carry a renewable stipend
of $22,000 plus full tuition waiver.
Applicants are urged to apply prior to application for
competitive NSF and Andrew Mellon Predoctoral fellowships
in the history and philosophy of science. Deadlines for
these applications are typically in November of the year
preceding admission, but students may also apply for these
in the first year of work in the Program.
Citizens of the United States who are members of underrepresented
groups — including first generation, low income, African
American, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American students — are
eligible for Diversity Fellowships,
which carry with them tuition awards and duty-free fellowships
for the first two years of graduate studies. Applicants
from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, or South America are
eligible for a first year tuition fellowship.
