Project in the Hollocher Lab: My project in the lab is to PCR and clone the entire yellow locus from both Drosophila similis (from the island of St. Vincent) and Drosophila polymorpha (from Brazil). These clones will then be sequenced. My studies complement early studies that have looked at the sequence of yellow from Drosophila dunni (from the island of Puerto Rico) and D. nigrodunni (from the island of Barbados). The benefit of including a line from Brazil is that its sequence should be rather different from those of the various island species we have looked at already. The degree of differentiation among yellow sequences will be used to study the evolutionary biology of these Caribbean Drosophila species.
