Holy Cross priests of the Eastern U.S.A. Province first went to Peru in 1963 to do pastoral work on a plantation at Cartavio. In 1970 Holy Cross staffed Santa Cruz Parish in Chimbote on the coast, and in 1975, bolstered by Holy Cross personnel in exile from the Pinochet regime in Chile, the community there accepted pastoral responsibility for the area of Canto Grande in Lima, founding Nuestro Senor de la Esperanza Parish there. This parish now includes an important Fe y Alegria (elementary and secondary) school for the poor. Holy Cross also works among the Aymara population in the mountainous region of Puno, administering both a parish and an Institute for Aymara Studies there. 45 Holy Cross priests, brothers and sisters now serve in Peru.
