More than 210 Holy Cross
priests, brothers and sisters now work in various parts of India - in
the tribal areas of the Northeast (where two dioceses are under Holy
Cross bishops) and in the majority Hindu states of central and south
India. Originally united with Holy Cross in East Bengal, after the partition
in 1947 religious working in India were separated from their brothers
and sisters in Bangladesh. A novitiate was opened in Yercaud, Tamil
Nadu, in 1959. The following year some Holy Cross Brothers from Canada
arrived in south India and began to teach in schools. By 1972, Indian-born
Holy Cross missionaries returned to Haflong in the north, and in 1977
to Mizoram. There are now two provinces of Holy Cross priests in India
- one in the south and one in the northeast; there is a growing district
of Holy Cross brothers; and recently the first Indian Holy Cross sister
professed vows.
