Sixty years ago, in 1943,
religious from the US Province of Holy Cross arrived in Chile and began
St. George's College, an educational ministry that anchors the Holy
Cross commitment in Chile to this day. Outspoken advocates of the poor,
Holy Cross saw its faith-based education challenged by the government
of General Pinochet which intervened at St. George's College in 1973
and took control. This led to a focus on other ministries and enabled
the congregation, in 1976, to assume responsibility for a school situated
among the poor, Colegio Andacollo. In 1986, Holy Cross was allowed to
return to the administration of St. George's, and today the twenty-three
Holy Cross religious in Chile minister in these schools, in parishes,
and in two orphanages.
