Canadian Holy Cross priests
arrived in Sao Paulo in 1944, and in 1947 Holy Cross Sisters joined
them, the next year establishing Colegio Santa Maria there. In the early
1950s Holy Cross Brothers from southwest U.S.A. assumed responsibility
for Colegio Don Amando in Santarem, while the priests founded Colegio
Santa Cruz in Sao Paulo. The Brothers founded yet another school in
1961, Colegio Notre Dame in Campinas. These quality schools have anchored
and supported a diverse Holy Cross effort in service to the poor, including
literacy and adult education programs, diverse parish ministries, work
with Basic Christian Communities, and the promotion of justice and peace.
There are now 48 Holy Cross religious in Brazil.
