Tips for Using Fonts in Microsoft Word (MAC)

• What fonts are available in the clusters?

OIT Staff have recently added the latest fonts from Linguist's Software, which include SuperGreek and Graeca, SuperHebrew and Hebraica, at least seven paleo-Hebrew fonts, and one cursive Hebrew script font. Unfortunately, they also deleted a couple of the Semitic fonts we use less regularly. OIT has a site license for these other fonts, so the only thing preventing their restoration to the designated Macs is some sign of student need.

• How do you select fonts once you're on the machine?

One of two ways - either through the Font menu or from the ruler.


 

 

• Forget the remapped Keyboard?

You're never far from a quick view of the keyboard character assignments for the font you're working in. Drag down from the apple in the upper left corner of your screen and select "Key Caps." Your menu bar in the upper screen will change to read "File," "Edit," and "Key Caps." Drag down from this second Key Caps menu until the font you're working in is selected. The basic keyboard for that font opens in a window. To view all of the key values on the keyboard, hold down first the "shift" button, then the "option" button, then the "shift-option" buttons, and new windows will reveal the Characters available with these auxiliary keys.


 

 

• How do you enter Hebrew characters?
• Use a font size one or two points larger than "normal."
• For short texts, type the word(s) backwards, or type it in the correct direction with a backspace after each key-strike. It's a good idea to use "non-breaking spaces" (option space bar) between words so that they stay together in the correct order .
• For longer texts, type as above, but use a right tab at the right margin and tab each line or use the flush right alignment option on the menu bar.
• There are Hebrew word processors and modules and right-to-left macros that make typing in Hebrew less cumbersome. But as far as we know, they're not available in the clusters.

 

 

• Short cuts for the Keyboard

On your own computer, you can customize key assignments to speed certain strokes. Under the "Commands" menu, select "Tools" and proceed from there.


 

 

• Troubleshooting that tricky apostrophe key

Characters assigned to the apostrophe key will not come out correctly in the foreign font if the computer's preferences have been set to type "smart quotes." Simply go to the "Preferences" menu under "Tools," and turn the "smart quotes" off.

• Using "Styles" for spiffy papers

Read the section on "Styles" in your Microsoft Word manual. It will enable you to save a lot of time in the long run and to produce more uniform looking papers. With styles, you can determine the look of every section of your paper, from body to indented quotes to footnotes to bibliography. One feature you should consider as part of the definition of "Normal" style in any paper is exact spacing in the Paragraph Format window. Exact spacing (double your type point size in a double-spaced paper, equal to your type-point size in a single-spaced paper) will eliminate the irregular spacing that diacriticals and tall foreign letters sometimes introduce.
