Specialty Shops and Produce

Farmers’
Market: Produce, meats, cheeses, specialty food items, bakery, crafts, and
more. Open all year Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; May–Sept. also Friday. 1105
Northside Blvd., South Bend.
City-wide Liquors: Great selection of beer, wine, single-malts, and other
spirits. Four locations around the area, including downtown South Bend, Grape
Road, Bittersweet Road, and 8th St. in Mishawaka.
India Market: An Indian grocery attached to the Star of
India restaurant on Grape Road in Mishawaka. 3915 Grape Rd., 271-5557.
Saigon Market: Asian groceries and produce. 208 W. Colfax
Ave. in downtown South Bend, 289-7623.
Pubs
Fiddler’s Hearth:
Cozy and family-friendly. Large beer and whisk(e)y selection. Pub fare and more
“upscale” options. Live music Wed-Sat. 127 N. Main in downtown South Bend.
Mishawaka
Brewing Co.: Features its own microbrews and a large menu. 3703 N. Main in
Mishawaka.
Thai:
Siam: A small place in downtown South Bend. 211 North Main
St., 232-4445.
Khun Daeng Thai Kitchen: 302 E. Russ St., Mishawaka (just
south of McKinley). 259-0735.
Middle Eastern/Mediterranean
Elia’s: Fairly limited menu but good kebabs, falafel, and
tabbouli. 115 N. Dixie Way (SR 933), South Bend. 277-7239.
Olive Mount Grille: 615 W. Edison in Mishawaka, 255-9000.
Mexican
La Esperanza: Extensive menu, good food, and reasonable
prices. Close to campus: 1636 N. Ironwood, South Bend. 273-0345.
Mazatlan: Good food and prices even more reasonable than La
Esperanza’s. The Dos Equis comes in a frosted mug. 507 E. McKinley in
Mishawaka. 259-4430.
Cafes and Coffee Shops
Chicory Café: A New Orleans-themed café in downtown South Bend. Coffee, gelato, po’boy sandwiches, soups,
and salads. Corner of Michigan and Jefferson Sts.
Macri’s Italian Bakery: Coffee, sandwiches, bakery. 214 N.
Niles Ave, across the river from downtown South Bend. 282-1010.
The Beanery: Downtown Mishawaka. Coffee, breakfast, wraps, panini,
salads. Live music on weekends. 117 S. Main St.
Japanese/Sushi
Toyo Grill: Excellent sushi, but the service can be very
slow. 620 Edison Road, Mishawaka. 254-9120.
Matuba: 2930 McKinley in Mishawaka. 251-0674.
Italian/Pizza
Roccos: A South Bend institution for the last 50 years,
still owned by the same family that opened it. 537 N. St. Louis Blvd in South
Bend, 233-2464.
Cosimo and Susie’s: Another family-owned place, this one in
the Town and Country shopping center in Mishawaka (corner of McKinley and
Hickory). 2446 Miracle Ln., 258-4911.
Other/American
The Vine: A wine bar with a variety of entrees, pasta, and
sandwiches. Next to the Morris Theatre in downtown South Bend. 103 W. Colfax,
234-WINE.
LaSalle Grill: Upscale American
cuisine; entrees in the $20–$30 range make this a good place to celebrate a
special event. 115 W. Colfax.
Bonefish Grill: Well-prepared fish
and seafood (as well as other entrees) at very reasonable prices. 620 W. Edison
Road.
