Professional Development Sessions
April 21, 2009 New York, NY
Business is about performance, performance is about judgment, and judgment rests on values.
In a globalized world of increasing complexity, competition, and uncertainty, professors of Management at the Mendoza College of Business, Dr. Viva Bartkus and Dr. Ed Conlon believe that one can tackle even the biggest challenges in a confident way by focusing on three themes: discovering solutions from the problem’s symptoms; moving from analysis to action; and driving solutions through the organization.
On Tuesday, April 21, 2009, Viva and Ed will be in New York to conduct a professional development seminar on leadership and judgment for business alumni.   The two will provide many outstanding stories from the 10 years Viva spent at McKinsey, as well as Ed’s 30 years as a scholar and professor at the university.  The thoughtful analysis of real life case studies demonstrates how problem solving has become an underrated leadership skill, and the critical role of well-examined values an underemphasized one.
The professors will help you develop habits of mind and the confidence in one’s ability to put solutions into practice.  These habits in reference include:
  • Defining the problem in an effective and useful way;
  • Probing the issues and nuances that underlie the problem;
  • Choosing the right frameworks to analyze various parts of the problem;
  • Using creativity to find hidden insights;
  • Evaluating the solution through a pragmatic lens to assure that it can reasonably be implemented;
  • Learning to know when it’s time to stop analyzing and begin implementing.
The seminar will take place on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.  The details are as follows.
