Brief History of GreeND

The organizational landscape of Notre Dame energy initiatives has changed significantly in the past few years and has led to the creation of GreeND in 2007 by Lourdes Long, Colleen Kelly, Mark Koegel, Zach Einterz, and Felipe Witchger. GreeND is a comprehensive student organization comprised of a leadership core and seven committees that organize and facilitate energy, environment, and sustainability activities at Notre Dame:
  • December 2005: Notre Dame Energy Center created to coordinate university-level energy research
  • December 2006: Energy Center Student Advisory Board created to integrate student ideas into the Energy Center. Energy and Environmental Issues Committee formed to broaden energy and environmental awareness, report on Notre Dame green initiatives, and advise University leadership on eco-friendly opportunities
  • March 2007: Energy and Environmental Issues (E&EI) Student Core Team created to coordinate existing student efforts
  • October 2007: First Notre Dame Energy Week to raise student awareness of energy issues
  • November 2007: E&EI Student Core Team organized the founding of GreeND to involve growing number of interested students and to foster greater energy education, leadership development, and sustainable campus action
  • January 2008: GreeND President Lourdes Long and Vice President Colleen Kelly appointed to the University's Energy and Environmental Issues Committee.
  • July 2008: GreeND acheives official SAO club status.
