Text: General Chemistry (Fourth Edition), by Hill, Petrucci, McCreary and Perry
This book is the same one that was used last semester in Chemistry 113. The textbook is available at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, and comes with a Selected Solutions Manual.
Laboratory:
  • Labs will begin meeting on Tuesday, January 24th.
  • You must purchase a lab manual and goggles before you come to your first lab session (aprons will be provided). The goggles are available at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, and the lab manual can be purchased from the ND Copy Shop in LaFortune. You'll need the General Chemistry II lab course pack for chem 11114.
  • The laboratory is located in Room 244 of Nieuwland Science Hall (NSH). The first meeting will be in the pre-lab discussion room (check your schedule), and not in 244 NSH.
Tutorials: The tutorials are designed to supplement the lecture and to provide support and a collaborative learning environment that will help you understand the material. They are very important, and your attendance at the tutorials is an expected part of this class. During tutorial, we will go over new problems as a group and then a take-home quiz will be handed out which will be due the following day during class. Tutorials will start on Tuesday, January 24th.

Homework: Homework assignments are handed out in the tutorial sections are are due the following week in tutorial.
Grade: This class will not be curved. Final grades will be assigned based on your total score:
  Percentage
of Grade
Date Time
Homework 5 % collected in tutorials
Quizzes 5 % collected in class following tutorials
Labs 10 % collected in lab sections
Exam 1 16.7 % Thursday, February 9th 7:30 - 9:15 a.m.
Exam 2 16.7 % Thursday, March 2nd 7:30 - 9:15 a.m.
Exam 3 16.7 % Thursday, April 6th 7:30 - 9:15 a.m.
ACS Assessment Test 10 % Last week of Lab (During assigned lab period)
Final Exam 20 % Wednesday, May 10th 1:45 - 3:45 p.m.
The ACS Assessment test is a two-hour test that measures your understanding of all of the topics taught this year in general chemistry. After my midterm exams, the ACS test should seem relatively easy, and you can think of it as a warm-up for the final.

The grading scale for the total score is as follows:
A:> 90
A-:85-90
B+:80-85
B:75-80
B-:70-75
C+:65-70
C:60-65
C-:55-60
D:45-55
F:< 45
Other: There are approximately 150 students enrolled in this course. Please respect your fellow students by observing the following rules:
  • Silence is necessary for everyone to be able to hear the instructor (and for the instructor to hear questions!)
  • No food or drink in the lecture hall.
  • Be punctual. Late arrivals disrupt the class.
  • Please remember to turn off any electronic devices that might disrupt the class.
What we teach in general chemistry is both an important body of knowledge as well as a powerful way of thinking about the world. However, mastery of this subject requires hard work. I expect a substantial commitment of time to this material (on the order of 10 hours per week) in order to become comfortable with the topics and methods we use in chemistry.

The best way to understand the material in this class is to attend lectures regularly, and to make an honest (and sometimes painful) effort on each of the problems in your homework. Do not discuss a problem with others until you have spent at least 20 minutes working at the problem on your own. Do not copy or paraphrase any one else's work (including the solution manual). Suspected violations will be handled in accordance with the Academic Code of Honor.
