Gold nanorods which start as single crystals or poly-crystalline solids with twinning boundaries can undergo a fascinating melting process upon laser heating. Our group is currently studying the dynamics of melting of these rods using the embedded atom method (EAM) to provide a model for the interaction potential between the atoms.
