Dear
First-Year Student,
Congratulations
once again on your acceptance to the University of Notre Dame.
We are pleased that you have chosen to continue your intellectual
journey with us. You are about to join a community of learning
known for its vibrancy, creativity, and commitment to liberal
education in the Catholic tradition. Your four years here
will present you with a once in a lifetime opportunity to
explore life's larger questions and participate in the creation
of new knowledge while at the same time acquiring those habits
of mind and heart that equip one to be a responsible steward
and agent of positive change in our world.
Your
first year at Notre Dame is one of your most important. Its
intent is to provide a foundation in the arts, sciences, and
humanities that has both breadth and depth. The curriculum
is designed to enable you to appreciate the implicit values
of liberal learning and to make an informed choice about a
field of academic specialization. It will be exciting, challenging,
and tremendously rewarding.
During
the next few months, you will receive information to help
you prepare for your arrival here in August. All mailings
from our office will be sent in hard copy and posted on our
website (fys.nd.edu). Included in this mailing are these four
pieces:
- Credit
by Examination at Notre Dame
-
Math Credit and Language
Placement Examination Schedule for August 19, 2005
-
First-Year Orientation,
Important Phone Numbers, and Academic Calendar
- Travel,
Accommodations, and Maps
Other
First Year of Studies (FYS) mailings to watch for this summer:
- In
early June you will receive course selection materials.
Completing the Course Selection Form and returning it by
July 1st is the most important thing you will do this summer.
- You
will receive information on how to get your NetID so you
can access a wide variety of Notre Dame computer resources.
- Finally,
in August, you will receive your course schedule and the
name of your advisor.
You
begin your Notre Dame career at an historic moment as Father
John Jenkins, C.S.C., is inaugurated as the University’s
17th president. Part of the celebration on September 22 and
23 will be an academic forum led by retired NBC News anchor
Tom Brokaw in which a panel of internationally renowned leaders
will discuss the role of religion in promoting world peace.
In preparation for this event, we will provide electronic
access to selected writings of these speakers so that you
can read them over the summer.
As
your final days of high school draw to a close, please be
assured of my very best wishes as you celebrate having reached
such a significant milestone. Your final year marks the end
of one phase in your life and your entry into the First Year
of Studies signals the beginning of another. We look forward
to your arrival in August and to working with you as this
next stage in your educational pilgrimage unfolds.
Sincerely,
Hugh
