Welcome Back, Strings & Wings!
by Tim Callan ('03)

Hello, my friends. Tim Callan checking in, before I check out as business manager and resume my duties as that annoying bass that Steve just can't stop from having fun. "I wouldn't use the word 'fun' in this choir. It's more 'spirit-filled joy.'" Yes, Steve did in fact say this, and we refuse to let him forget it! Ah, the humor of the Folk Choir…

So welcome back to Strings & Wings, the old Folk Choir newsletter recently resurrected through the efforts of many. Somewhere in the last twenty years, an anonymous church-goer on campus nicknamed the two Sunday morning masses. The 10:00 mass was dubbed "Smells & Bells," while we were given none other than "Strings & Wings." I have a feeling we came out on top in this category. Steve asked me over a year ago to reassemble a database of Folkhead alumni and put this newsletter back on the map. As with everything I do, it has taken quite a bit of time, but I hope the quality makes up for the wait.

I have many dreams for this work, which I hope to put into action. The officers of the choir have been brainstorming, and we've come up with several fun possibilities. First, we hope to have a song of the season, although we still don't know how often we'll be sending this out. We'll always have a word from the director, because people wait inline to hear what he has to say J Some social activities will be mentioned, like the choir's formal dance (yes, at a bowling alley) or the first two-hand tap football game (we tried tackle, but someone got hurt - they don't call use the Full Contact Choir for nothing!). We will always have upcoming events and tour schedules to share with you, and much more. If you have any ideas, please let us know! We're open to any and all creativity that will make this newsletter fun, humorous, and informative. (Whoops, I said "fun" again.)

For more information, contact us in any of the ways listed in this newsletter. Visit our web page (it's fantastic, and consequently not maintained by me), e-mail us, write us a letter, or call us at Campus Ministry. This choir would never have been what it is if it weren't for each and every one of you. So please stay in the loop, drop by if you're ever in South Bend, and take a look at what you've helped to create. Thanks, take care, and God bless!

From the Desk of the (Social) Commish
by David Heineman ('04)

This past year has been a busy one for Folk Choir social events. As social commissioner, I've tried to find events that have wide appeal, are relatively easy to coordinate, and don't put a big dent in my ever-shrinking college-sized wallet. I've found the position to be very fulfilling personally, but more importantly, I've always tried to have fun with it.

In October we had our first dance of the year, the "Tasty, Not Tasteful: Things You Can't Wear to Sunday Mass" SYR at nearby Castle Point Apartments. I had a great time preparing for it and an even better time just being part of the insanity that we Folkheads can create. Our second event of the fall semester was a bowling trip to Chippewa Bowl. While not as well attended as the SYR, it was a great time for all attending. Plus, we all got to see Tim Stuhldreher's personal bowling ball, shoes, and bag, and that alone was worth the price of admission.

This spring semester, we've been busier than ever! After a big outing to Bruno's in February, we followed up with our most successful event of the year, the Folk Choir Formal, a.k.a. the "Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether" Ball (a not-so-favorite hymn of the choir). This took us to Beacon Bowl on a Saturday night filled with bowling, dancing, and some crazy Folkheads! If you have time, check out the pictures at http://www.nd.edu/~folk/funpics.html!

Folk Choir Football was in the air as soon as Holy Cross Ordinations ended on April 6. The Basses and Altos took on the Tenors and Sopranos, and, after a fiercely fought battle, the game ended in a tie. Activities during senior week and before this spring's tour included movie nights and a visit to Pinhook Park. It's been a wonderful year for the Folk Choir, and with a great tour coming up, more fun with surely be on the way!
