Audition InformationTo all of you new Notre Dame students who are interested in joining our ensemble, welcome and congratulations! You are about to enter into four amazing, life-forming years. Perhaps the Notre Dame Folk Choir will be a part of that experience. If you are interested in auditioning, please read this information over carefully.
Note: The Folk Choir audition process is not part of the Music Department group auditions held on Sunday, August 24, and Monday, August 25, 2008. These auditions, held in Crowley Hall, are for the Glee Club, Liturgical Choir, Women's Liturgical Choir, and University Chorale. You can find out more information about these ensembles below. To arrange for an audition with the Folk Choir, it is best to please contact the director of the Folk Choir, Steven Warner, by e-mail before you arrive at Notre Dame in August. Auditions will be held Saturday, August 23, 2008 during Freshman Orientation weekend from 2:00-6:00 P.M. on the third floor of the Coleman-Morse Center. A sign-up sheet will also be posted in the third-floor hallway that day for drop-in auditions. First come, first served! Auditioning for the Folk Choir consists of several things: an informal interview (which allows you to spend some time in dialogue with the director of the Folk Choir), some singing exercises (warm-ups), singing a well-known hymn, and a short example of sight singing. The whole process lasts about twenty minutes and is one-on-one, giving you an opportunity to ask your own questions and to find out exactly what is involved in becoming part of one of Notre Dame's principal liturgical choirs. If you would like to be considered for other music ensembles but still have the Folk Choir as your first choice, you should still audition on Saturday afternoon. Decisions from the audition process will be made and posted by the end of the evening. If you do not make it into our ensemble, you are then completely free to go through the audition process at Crowley Hall of Music. This audition is much shorter (about six to eight minutes long) and will be attended by the choral directors of the ensembles mentioned above. To arrange for this audition, go to Crowley Hall of Music on Freshman Orientation weekend, pick up and fill out an audition form, and sign up for a time. For more information about other ensembles on the Notre Dame campus, many of which also conduct auditions during the start of the fall semester, please refer to their respective websites:
For upperclassmen and graduate students at Notre Dame interested in the Folk Choir, you too are most welcome and have the option of auditioning for our ensemble. Interview auditions will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 during final exam study days for those interested in joining the Folk Choir for the upcoming school year. Please contact the director of the Folk Choir prior to the end of the spring semester to schedule a time to meet for an audition during these study days. Also, upperclassmen and graduate students are free to go through the same process prescribed above for auditioning at the beginning of the school year in August. Remember again the difference between an interview specific to the Folk Choir and a general music audition. If you have any further questions about the Folk Choir or the audition process not answered here, you can personally contact the director of the Folk Choir. Thanks for your interest in our ministry and best of luck for a successful academic year!
