National SMART Grant
(National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent)
The National SMART Grant is a federal grant program which was created to encourage students to take challenging courses in high school and to pursue college majors in high demand in the global economy. The National SMART Grant of up to $4,000 is restricted to students in the junior or senior year of college.
The student must meet the following federally established criteria to receive a SMART grant:
- Must complete the 2009/2010 FAFSA and be determined to be eligible for a federal Pell Grant during the 2009/2010 academic year
- Must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree seeking program
- Must enroll each semester in coursework required for the completion of the eligible major
- Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- Must be an undergraduate student in the third or fourth academic year of their four year program (at Notre Dame)
- Must have a cumulative GPA at Notre Dame of at least a 3.0 at the end of each semester
- Must be pursuing a major in mathematics, physical, life and computer sciences, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language The Office of Financial Aid will confirm eligibility of specific majors in accordance with the federally published approved listing. The amount of the SMART grant in combination with Federal Pell Grant and other financial aid cannot exceed demonstrated financial need.
The awards are not automatically renewable. The student must apply annually and meet the stated eligibility criteria.
