Frequently Asked Questions
Eligibility Questions
Q: Who is eligible for a Paid Community Service job?
A: Students who have Federal Work-Study eligibility are able to work at any of our Community Service positions and be paid for their work through the Federal Work-Study program.
Q: I have "Campus Employment" eligibility. Can I still work at a Community Service agency?
A: After a review of your financial aid file, the Office of Financial Aid may be able to make adjustments to your financial aid to enable you to obtain Federal Work-Study eligibility. This is done on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid to review your situation before contacting a Community Service Agency.
Transportation Questions
Q: I don't have a car. Do Community Service jobs provide transportation?
A: You may inquire about transportation options with the organization for which you are interested in working. Some of our Community Service agencies are within walking distance, or accessible by a very short bus ride. Organizations can also help to get you in touch with other student employees who work with the organization and are willing to carpool.
Procedure Questions
Q: How do I go about getting a Community Service job?
A: Review the JOBboard; when you find a position of interest, make a note of the contact name and phone number or e-mail address on the job posting. Contact the organization by phone or e-mail as per the job posting. When you and the organization make contact, an interview time and place should be arranged which fits both of your schedules.
When you meet with the organization, make sure to bring your academic class schedule for scheduling purposes. Also, present a printout from insideND of your financial aid award reflecting Federal Work-Study to your employer.
Q: How do I access my Federal Work-Study award through insideND?
A: Your work eligibility can be found in your Financial Aid Award. Log into insideND with your netID and password, select the "Student Academic" tab, and click on the "+" sign next to Financial Aid.
Q: Who is my employer: Notre Dame or the Community Service Agency?
A: Students employed through the Federal Work-Study program and who work for a Community Service Agency are considered employees of Notre Dame. Students receive their paychecks and W-2's from Notre Dame.
Q: I can only work in the evenings. Can this be accommodated?
A: Many Community Service jobs have flexible hours, while others may request students for specific times of the day. These times are outlined on each JOBboard posting.
Q: I currently have an on-campus job, but would like to work a few hours with a Community Service organization. Can I have two different jobs?
A: Yes. As long as your earnings at the Community Service Job do not surpass your Federal Work Study eligibility.
