How to Apply for Financial
Aid
The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) serve as the official applications for need-based financial aid at the University of Notre Dame. To be considered for all forms of financial assistance, students must file both these forms each year by the University's priority filing deadline noted above. Prospective students should
not wait for an admission decision before filing the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE and FAFSA.
Step One

Notre Dame's Federal School Code is 001840.
Step Four
Submit supporting documentation to the Office of Financial Aid |
In addition to the PROFILE and FAFSA, first-time financial aid applicants are asked to submit the following directly to the Office of Financial Aid:
- Signed copies of parents' and student's 2007 year Federal Tax Return (all schedules)
- Parents' W-2 Form(s)
- Other forms as requested by the University of Notre Dame Office of Financial Aid
Renewal applicants for financial aid may be asked to submit copies of federal tax returns and W-2 forms. If supporting documents are required from renewal applicants, the request is sent to the student.
If requested, these documents should be either faxed or mailed to the Office of Financial Aid within 2 weeks.
Applicants whose parents are divorced or separated are required to submit financial information on both parents. The custodial parent (and his or her spouse) must complete the FAFSA and CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Application. The non-custodial parent (and his or her spouse) must complete the non-custodial parent statement. Both the custodial and non-custodial parents should submit signed copies of their 2007 year Federal Tax Returns and W-2 Forms.
The Financial Aid Office begins mailing financial aid award letters
to Early Action-admitted students in late March, to Regular Action-admitted
students in early April and to returning upperclass students beginning
May 1.
In order to be eligible for federal student assistance, the student
must be either a citizen or eligible non-citizen of the United States
with a valid Social Security Number. In general, students must be
classified as degree seeking to participate in the federal aid programs
and be enrolled on at least a half-time basis. Additionally, students
may not owe a refund on a federal student grant, nor be in default
on a federal student loan.
Financial Aid recipients also must meet minimum Standards of Academic
Progress in order to qualify for assistance. These Standards of Progress
are outlined in detail in the Bulletin of Information or may be obtained
directly from the Office of Financial Aid.
Students who apply for and receive financial assistance and later
withdraw during a semester may be eligible for an adjustment to their
University charges and financial aid credits for the semester based
on the University Withdrawal Policy.
