Because…

Women in America make about 73 cents on a man’s dollar. Specifically, Black women make 63 cents and Latinas make 54 cents for every dollar a man makes…

Though women are earning competitive educational backgrounds, they are dramatically underrepresented in professional decision-making positions…

Women are about half of the US population, but they are only 14% of the Senate, 15% of the House of Representatives, and no woman has ever served as President or Vice President of the United States…

In the media women, when used to sell products, are often over-sexualized or domesticized but are virtually invisible as experts of politics, medicine, or science…

Every two minutes, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted (Based on 2002 National Crime Victimization Survey, US Dept. of Justice)

An estimated 17.7 million women have been victims of attempted or completed rape (National Institute of Justice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1998)

Women are underrepresented as tenured professors at Notre Dame…

The US Department of Justice estimates that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5 college women will be victimized by an attempted or completed rape before graduation.

On this campus women’s social spaces are ruled by the words: “Two feet on the floor at all times…”

…and these are just a few ways in which women in particular are oppressed in our communities. Don't let the cycle continue. Stand for something! TAKE A STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE & INEQUALITY!
The need for feminism did not end when women were granted the vote or when they entered the workforce. There is still a real need for feminism in this world, in this country, and on this campus.
Feminist Voice hopes to fight for universal human equality by establishing a solid foundation of individuals in support of feminist values and hopes to educate and raise awareness about feminist issues within this group and also in the larger Notre Dame and South Bend communities. By both studying and acting out our feminist beliefs we WILL change our world.
