“The Courts must declare the sense of the law, and if they should be disposed to exercise WILL instead of JUDGMENT, the consequences could be the substitution for their pleasure for that of the legislative body.” — Federalist No. 78 |

The Federalist Society is an organization of law students and legal scholars interested in the current legal and political order. It was created in 1982 as a forum for conservatives and libertarians to discuss ideas openly and seriously. Although its members hold a variety of opinions, all adhere to the principles that the State exists to preserve freedom, the separation of powers is essential to maintaining the structure and essence of our Federal Constitution, and that it is the duty of the courts to say what the law is, not what it should be. With a membership of over one hundred, the Notre Dame Law School chapter is an active one that seeks to expose conservative and libertarian viewpoints to the law school community for discussion and debate. |
