Falto Knowledge

This handy little sheet will give you an introduction into the life of a Notre Dame Falto. Hopefully it will prepare you to meet all of us in August!

(The webmaster would rather the freshmen get to know everything firsthand, but what the section leaders say goes.  Here it is.)

1.Falto:Also known as the mellophone, marching French horn, trumpet on steroids. Comes from Horn in F, alto.

2.Sit Circle:A long-time falto tradition in which the section forms a circle by putting our feet heel-to-toe. We then proceed to sit down on each other's laps and walk a few steps!

3.Marchout:A special feature of game weekends. The band performs four of these between Friday and Saturday. They involve marching all around campus, playing some school songs, and doing some school cheers to pump up the Notre Dame students and fans!

4.Barnaby's:Renowned pizza place where the whole band goes after auditions on Sunday night.

5.Bruno's:A wonderful eating establishment in a shady part of South Bend. But don't worry, the buffet is amazing and the entire Falto section makes an annual trip there once every fall.

6.Trot:A crazy running style of march that we perform when we come out of the stadium tunnel on game day Saturdays, and other special occasions J Way too cool to describe!

7.Falto Football:Perhaps even better than Notre Dame Football...the faltos try their hand at football against other sections of the band.

8.$7.99:Our prized porcelain good luck cow.

9.$8.00:The porcelain good luck cow that replaced $7.99, who was tragically decapitated at a falto broomball game in 2004.

10.Saxophones:The section that faltos hate the most. All in jest, of course. Or is it...?

11.Baritones:Our brother section!

12.Trumpets:Our other favorite section!

13.Kristy:Senior falto majoring in Aerospace Engineering who unfortunately is single.  She dated a senior when she was a freshmen, so it's time for a freshmen to date her as a senior!

14.Pyramid:A tradition of falto women on gamedays. We create a pyramid in front of the Dome. This often makes for a bunch of hilarious pictures because it often collapses!

15.Dragonstea Din Tea :Romanian pop song that we often sing in public. The rest of the band has jumped on the bandwagon and is also now obsessed with this song.

Red Death, Techno, The Great Falto Race, Joe Falto:You'll just have to wait and see!

For you first time mellos, or if you're a little scratchy on the mello, here is a fingereing chart, with bonus fingerings!  Use them wisely.
