Q: What are the locations of the program?
We offer two Executive MBA programs―one at the main campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana with a remote classroom in Cincinnati, Ohio and the other in our downtown Chicago classroom at 224 South Michigan Avenue at Jackson Boulevard.

Q: What is the format of the South Bend program and the Chicago program?
The South Bend EMBA is a concise 21-month program and begins with new student orientation in July followed by classes starting in August. The regular class sessions meet once a month Wednesday afternoon until Saturday afternoon. There are three weeklong immersions on campus during the program and one international immersion.
The Chicago EMBA is a concise 17-month program and begins with new student orientation in December followed by classes starting in January. The regular class sessions meet on alternating Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. There are four weeklong immersions at Notre Dame with an optional international immersion.

Q: How does the EMBA program differ from the traditional full-time MBA program?
The EMBA program is structured to meet the needs of individuals in senior management roles, focusing on leadership skills needed to be successful at the executive level. The program generally targets participants who have 10-15 years of work experience, with at least five years of significant experience in a managerial/supervisory capacity. The collective professional experience of EMBA participants enriches the learning experience both in and outside the classroom.

Q: What areas does the EMBA curriculum emphasize?
The Notre Dame Executive MBA program has a general business curriculum with an emphasis on ethical leadership. The program is academically rigorous covering the different functional areas of business including finance, accounting, marketing, strategy, business planning, human resources, marketing, law and other disciplines. Students seeking advancement to the highest levels in their organizations need to have a broad-based education in combination with their functional expertise.

Q: How long does the program take to complete? The South Bend EMBA program is 21 months, beginning every August. The Chicago EMBA program is 17 months, beginning every January.

Q: How much time should I expect to set aside for homework during the week? On average, you should anticipate spending 20 hours per week on homework, including team meetings, project and individual work.

Q: How many students are in each class?
Enrollment is limited to 65 for the South Bend program and 70 for the Chicago program.

Q: Will I be expected to work alone, or will I be assigned to work with a group of my peers?
The work will be approximately 50 percent group work and 50 percent individual work. You will be assigned to a study team by the EMBA Program Director that will include five or six of your peers. Study teams are formed with the intention of bringing together a diverse group of individuals across functional areas and industries. The groups remain together for the length of the program.

Q: Where do I stay during the week residencies on campus? During residencies, the accommodations are provided by the program. Students will be provided rooms in local hotels.

Q: Will my degree be the same as if I attended the full-time program?Yes. There is only one Master of Business Administration degree granted by the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame.

Q: Who are the faculty teaching in the EMBA? Faculty are drawn from the same pool of faculty teaching in the full-time MBA program. EMBA faculty are more often senior faculty members with professional and consulting experience.

Q: What are the Admissions Requirements?

An exceptional level of English proficiency is required and will be assessed by the completed application as well as the in-person interview. It may be requested that the candidate take the TOEFL exam.

Q: What is needed as part of the Application Process?
- Application – The application may be submitted via website www.executive.nd.edu or a PDF is available on the website to be printed and mailed.
- Application Fee – The application fee is $100.00. The application fee is waived if you attend an information session. Please contact the Admissions Manager for further information.
- Official Transcripts – It is a requirement that each applicant submit official transcripts from each College and University attended. In order for the transcripts to be considered official, they need to be sent directly to the Executive MBA Admissions Manager at the University of Notre Dame in a sealed envelope.
- Letters of Recommendation - Letters of recommendation should be obtained from individuals who know the candidate well and can present a balanced evaluation and assessment of the candidate’s capabilities. Recommenders should comment on the candidate’s specific professional achievements, managerial experience, and his/her ability to contribute to the Executive MBA classroom. One letter should come from a senior executive within the candidate’s organization, and the second letter should be from the candidate’s immediate supervisor or another individual who has intimate knowledge of his/her work. If the candidate is self-employed, he/she should ask people who know the candidate well and can present balanced evaluations and assessments of his/her work. A third letter may be submitted, but is not required. There is no set format or form to follow except that the letters should be completed on corporate or personal stationery and forwarded directly to the Notre Dame Executive MBA Program via US mail or email to the Executive MBA Admissions Manager.
- Personal Essays - The personal essays are an opportunity for applicants to express their unique qualifications, experiences, and reasons for applying to the Notre Dame Executive MBA Program. The essay questions are listed on the application. Answers should be typed and double-spaced. Please limit responses to 1-2 pages per question. They may be submitted with the on-line application or sent separately in a Word or PDF document.
- Resume – Applicants must include a resume to provide the Admissions Committee that reflects most recent professional experience and accomplishments. This may be sent via US mail or email to the EMBA Admissions Manager.
- Admissions Interview - Once completed application materials are received, the file is reviewed. Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview with the Director of Degree Programs or a college designee.
- Committee Process - After the admissions file is complete, the file will be forwarded to the Mendoza College of Business Admissions Committee. Members of the committee will review the candidate’s qualifications separately and submit their recommendations. The timeline from the admission interview to the admissions decision is approximately two to three weeks.

Q: Is there a form for the recommendation letters? No. We do not have a form for recommendation letters. Please reference the additional information in the application process question above.

Q: Do you send confirmation of receipt of documents? No. Due to time constraints with the processing of application materials, we simply are not able to send confirmation of receipt of materials. If you need to verify your documentation has been delivered to the Admissions Manager, we recommend you submit your materials by certified mail or another service that allows shipment tracking and receipt confirmation.

Q: How long is the interview, and what types of questions are asked? The interview usually lasts approximately one hour. The dress is business attire. The interview questions will center on your work experience, desire to pursue the MBA and expectations. There is no specific preparation required for the interview. All interviews are conducted in South Bend, Cincinnati, or Chicago.

Q: Do you hold information sessions? Yes. Multiple sessions are scheduled each year. For the latest schedule for South Bend or Chicago, please visit www.executive.nd.edu. As a thank you for attending the reception, you will receive an application fee waiver worth $100.00. If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled sessions, we would be happy to meet with you on an individual basis either in person or over the phone. Q: May I visit class? Yes. There are opportunities for prospective students to visit a class either in Chicago or South Bend. This will provide you an opportunity to see a class in session, meet the faculty and speak with current students about the program. Please contact the Admissions Manager to schedule the visit.

Q: When are applications due? For the South Bend EMBA program, final applications are due at the end of May. Please click here for current application deadline information. Because a rolling admissions process is used, we encourage you to apply early.

Q: Can applicants pay for the application fee by credit card? Yes. Credit card payment for the application fee is available for all applications submitted through the on-line application process.

Q: If I paid the application fee with a previous application, do I need to pay again? No additional application fee is required, provided you paid the fee with your first application.

Q: When will I be notified of a decision regarding my admission?Applications are considered on a rolling admissions basis. All complete applications will be reviewed as they are received, and decisions will be communicated within 2-3 weeks after the interview is complete.

Q: Do I have to take the GMAT? It is not a required component of the application process but may be an outcome contingency from the Admissions Committee after reviewing your file. The Admissions Committee may require the GMAT depending on the candidate’s educational background and if they have earned an undergraduate degree.

Q: Do international candidates have to take the TOEFL? An exceptional level of English proficiency is required and will be assessed by the completed application as well as the in-person interview. Q: Is it possible to be applying without currently being employed? No. Active employment is required to be considered for admission.

Q: Is it possible to be admitted without a university degree? The formal admissions requirements call for a university degree. However, exceptions have been made for applicants who have displayed an impressive professional and/or personal track record. In this case, the applicant would need to take the GMAT.

Q: Is there additional material that I need to include since I did not graduate from an American university? Applicants who received a degree from a university outside of the U.S. must submit a certified copy of the diploma/certificate as well as an official transcript (list of courses and the qualification received) of the diploma. These documents also must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Q: What is included in the cost of the program? The cost of tuition includes lodging and meals during required residency weeks in South Bend, continental breakfast and lunch on class days, textbooks, cases, reprints, software, etc. Tuition does not include incidentals and travel expenses.

Q: When are payments due? For the South Bend & Chicago EMBA, the full tuition for the program is divided by the total number of progressions. South Bend has four and Chicago has three. Q: Is corporate sponsorship required? Corporate financial sponsorship is not required to apply to the program, although it is important for the organization to be aware of your participation and support your time away from the office.
