IFS - What is it? http://www.nd.edu/~ess/IFS Why it was proposed? Problems with the current file system (AFS) Gary Dobbins talks about the lay out of the current file system and how the new file system will be added. -AFS works well with most Unix users -IFS modifies nothing from the AFS side -IFS will parallel with AFS -Windows and Macs need to have the same success that AFS and Unix have. -DFS was taken into consideration, but had to many problems Kevin Rowland -A question of performance is asked about this project -Kevin plans on testing this new file system for performance information -Gary gives general statistics on people using more than one platform about 30%, while about 70% only use one platform (Unix, Windows, Mac) -A stakeholder asks a question of scalability about IFS. If there is high demand will IFS be ready? -A question of funding for IFS is asked, IFS is still being funded -A question is asked about the officers awareness of possible cost of this project, it was stated that the officers were aware of the IFS project. -Kevin states the he would like to present his solutions in a menu format, going from the best solution down. Regardless of what the cost is of each solution. -IFS uses the file locking capabilities of Windows and Macs, where AFS does not -Question about OS 10(Mac), not going to use at this time. -A stakeholder addresses the concern about AFS needing to be improved -Kevin states it is not part of the scope of this project -Kevin talks about information located on the website about the deliverables. -Kevin is going to add vendor information to the website -Performance is stated by a stakeholder as being the most important issue -The talk leads into a networking issue concerning bandwidth -A networking individual will be invited to the next meeting. -Meeting ends at 3:25pm -The next meeting will in about 2 weeks
