Network Appliance

Vendor: Network Appliance Product: Filer 800 Series
Status: Eval unit on site (2/20/2001)
Eval Unit: NetApp F840
OS: Data ONTAP 6.1X10
CPU: ??? Pentium III

Notes:

3/5/2001 (KR) Filer 840 arrives. Installed with Kevin Karaffa from NetApp. Install beta 10 of ONTAP 6.1 software which includes some Win2K support.

3/7/2001 (KR) Performed the following (in FilerView):
CIFS->Configure->General Setup [Windows Domain = W2KESS; Win2K Admin = <admin>; Win2K Admin Password = <admin passwd>; Show Snapshot = yes]

Joined a Win2K domain without a problem (after manually creating machine account in AD). Did *not* need to specify (in Active Directory) that machine requires pre-Windows2000 account access, as was necessary before ONTAP 6.1.

4/3/2001 (KR) Data ONTAP software upgraded to release candidate 6.1

4/6/2001 (KR/IB) Performed the following (in FilerView):
CIFS->Conversion to NTFS Style->Apply
CIFS->Configure->Security [Use GID Perms = No; Default Security Style = NTFS]
CIFS->Configure->Shares->Manage->C$->Change Access->Add ACE [W2KESS\Administrator = Full]
CIFS->Configure->Shares->Manage->ETC$->Change Access->Add ACE [W2KESS\Administrator = Full]
*Note: ACE for BUILTIN\Administrators (Full) existed, of which W2KESS\Administrator is a member, but access was not being granted?!?, thus the need for explicit ACE.
CIFS->Configure->Shares->Add [Share Name=homes; Mount Point=/vol/vol0/homes]

Tested home directory usage by applying appropriate ACLs. Users can use Windows Explorer to manage the ACL of their own directory (e.g. share their directory (or portions of it) with other users)

4/9/2001 (KR/IB) Performed the following (in FilerView):
CIFS->Configure->General Setup [Windows Domain = WINDOWS; Win2K Admin = <admin>; Win2K Admin Password = <admin passwd>]

Attempted to join the filer 'FILER1' to WINDOWS.ND.EDU domain. If machine account did not pre-exist in AD, error "FILER1 does not have a computer account in the WINDOWS.ND.EDU domain" occured. After manually creating machine account in AD, error "Filer's security information differs from domain controller." ocurred.

CIFS->Configure->General Setup [Windows Domain = W2KESS; Win2K Admin = <admin>; Win2K Admin Password = <admin passwd>]

Attempting to join filer *back* to W2KESS.ND.EDU domain was successful *only* if a machine account was manually pre-created in AD.

*Note: Noticed that timezone was (reset?) to Eastern Daylight (during upgrade?) from Indiana-Eastern. Set correct TZ and time. Had no affect on above problems.
