Meaning and Motivation: Toward an Integration of Psychological, Religious and Philosophical Perspectives

This project is concerned with significant and enduring issues at the interface of psychology and religion---issues that are necessarily philosophical in nature but which also have implications for empirical research: Meaning and Motivation. Yet, dialogue between contemporary "scientific" psychology and relevant philosophical and religious traditions ranges from scant to non-existent. The goal of this project is to contribute significantly toward a change in this state of affairs. Three broad objectives will be pursued:

- Enrich understanding of Meaning and Motivation through an in depth consideration of philosophical and religious thought within Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions.
- Enhance understanding of the role of beliefs regarding ultimate purposes, understandings and values in framing the nature of human engagement in life and living.
- Contribute to an invigorated dialogue between motivational psychology and religious thought.
