Thinking On One’s Own:
Catholicism and American Liberalism from Slavery to Abortion

The goal of Thinking on One's Own is simple. It will provide a concise overview of how Catholic thought has intersected with American intellectual and cultural life over the past one hundred and fifty years, on issues ranging from slavery to abortion. This will entail examining both American anti-Catholicism -- one of the most under-studied and pervasive phenomena in American life through much of this period -- as well as the anti-liberal character of much Catholic thought. The central theme of the project will be the intermittent tension between an international Catholic intellectual tradition that stresses community at the expense of autonomy and an American liberalism increasingly centered on individual rights and the importance of "thinking on one's own."
