Religion and the Language of Place and Space in Modern English Fiction

This is a study of the language of place and space in modern English fiction and the relation of that language both to religious belief and to the changing nature of places and of attitudes or orientations to places from the closing decades of the nineteenth century until the closing decades of the twentieth. The project will follow the lead provided by works of narrative fiction to analyze and evaluate the consequences that places hold for the moral and spiritual well-being of people and to project the kinds of consequences for the construction of or understanding of place in human life that arise from religious belief.
