Title IX

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
-Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the 1964 Civil Rights Act

Title IX is commonly thought of as pertaining to varsity sports. However, the law is actually much broader. Title IX prohibits gender discrimination in all programs and activities of a university such as Notre Dame. Although two of the most common applications of the law are athletics and sexual harassment, Title IX also applies to admissions, financial aid, academic matters, career services, counseling and medical services, and all other programs and activities available to students at Notre Dame.

There are links on this website to many items of interest regarding Title IX and athletics. You may also want to browse the website of the Secretary's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics - a United States government commission on which Notre Dame women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw served as one of 15 appointed members at http://www.ed.gov/about/bdscomm/list/athletics/members.html . The Office of Institutional Equity website also contains much information about sexual harassment. If you have additional questions or concerns about Title IX, you can contact the Title IX coordinator.
