In 2006, SERO was awarded the Rodney F. Ganey Collaborative Community-based Research Mini Grant from the Center for Social Concerns. This is from the official announcement:

The University’s Center for Social Concerns awarded the 2006 Rodney F. Ganey Collaborative Community-based Research Mini Grant to Paul Brenner. The grant is given to University researchers in order to stimulate partnerships between Notre Dame and the community. Brenner, a graduate student in computer science and engineering, is using it to determine critical factors in successful interface between Notre Dame engineering students and local non-profit organizations with which they engage in consulting relationships.

Specifically, he and a team of 10 undergraduates, who have named themselves Student Engineers Reaching Out (SERO), assist the Logan Center and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center by modifying toys so that they are more functionally suitable for children with a variety of disabilities. SERO is also helping maximize the line efficiency of a local nonprofit packaging and distribution company that employs adults with developmental disabilities.
