Environmentally Conscious Chemical Process Design

Case Studies

As examples of new technology that has been or is being developed that prevents pollutions, the students are asked to explore three case studies that compare old technology with new technology. Two of the projects (coffee decaffeination and soybean oil extraction) emphasize solvent substitution and one (p-nitroaniline) emphasizes new chemistry that eliminates toxic intermediates and feedstocks. The case studies provide the opportunity for full-scale conceptual process design, as well as direct economic comparison between the two processes.
