The course meets three times each week. The times and formats
of those meetings are:
LECTURE SESSIONS
Every Monday and Friday there are four lecture sessions, all
students attend one of these. It is in this lecture that students are
given the background required to complete the projects. In addition, over
the course of the year a number of the lectures are reserved for guest
speakers from industry and individual presentations by Notre Dame engineering
departments.
LEARNING CENTER SESSIONS
In addition to the lecture sessions that involves all sections,
each section meets separately once a week in the Engineering Learning
Center (www.nd.edu/~englearn). The
learning center contains a computer cluster associated with table arrays,
workbench areas, project storage areas, and a variety of other equipment
that is used in carrying out the projects. During the learning center
meetings, the course instructor augments the material covered in lecture
and uses the learning center facilities to introduce the tools and skills
needed to successfully complete the four projects.
The hands-on, or learning center, portion of the course is organized
into sections of 25-30 students, each taught by a faculty member from
the College of Engineering assisted by an undergraduate student assistant. The primary Learning Center Instructors are Special Professional Faculty with industry experience.
