First Year of Studies in Engineering

Most first-year engineering students have a schedule that looks something like this:

Fall Semester
Composition or University Seminar 3
Calculus I 4
General Chemistry 4
Arts and Letters Course 3
Intro. to Engineering Systems I 3
Total 17

Spring Semester
Composition or University Seminar 3
Calculus II 4
Molecular Biology for Engineers 3
General Physics I 4
Intro. to Engineering Systems II 3
Total 17

All first-year Notre Dame students join the academic unit known as First Year of Studies (FYS). The FYS program provides students with one academic year of general core college courses in subjects such as math, science, and composition before the student joins one of the University's four undergraduate colleges. Although the FYS programs aim to allow students to experience a variety of academic disciplines, students do, however, tentatively declare a major to ensure that they take the proper foundational math and science courses.

First-year students who declare an intention to major in one of the eight programs offered by the College of Engineering take the schedule of classes illustrated in the charts on the left. In the spring of a student's first year, each student meets with an academic adviser to decide on a major within the College of Engineering and to plan a sophomore-year schedule of classes.
