Bioremediation: Real-world Learning and Applications

In November 2006 a group of students from the Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences participated in a field trip to southern Louisiana and the Mississippi coast. The purpose of the trip, like other learning activities within the College of engineering, was to help students develop an understanding of how engineering can and must relate to real-life issues. The professors who organized the trip hope to instill an increased understanding and appreciation of the delta and marshes as well as the engineered structures and activities that protect the coastal floodplain. They also discussed recent failures, such as the levee breach during Hurricane Katrina, and engineering technologies that are needed to help develop a safer flood protection system.
