Environmental Geosciences Program Provides Unique Perspective of Earth’s Systems

Emphasizing the physical processes that occur near or at the surface of the Earth, as well as the impact of human activity upon those processes, the environmental geosciences program at Notre Dame combines classroom activities, laboratory projects, field studies and a variety of opportunities for undergraduate research in order to prepare students for careers in environmental engineering. Students completing the program will possess an understanding of the interplay of natural processes such as mineral-water-rock-bacteria interactions with societal issues such as the presence of toxic heavy metals in groundwater and safe disposal of nuclear waste. In addition, the program meets the criteria for state certification in geology for those states requiring such certification.
