New First-Year Bio-based Course Sequence

General Chemistry — Fundamental Principles (10121)
Required for all first-year engineering students, this course and its accompanying lab provide an introduction to atomic structure, the properities of gases, equilibrium and kinetics, thermochemistry and thermodynamics, solubility and acidity in solution, and organic chemistry. This course is part of a sequence that lays the foundation for the bioengineering program options individual departments will offer.

General Chemistry — Biological Processes (10122)
Completing the first-year sequence, this course introduces engineering students to key themes in modern biology, including protein structure and function, gene structure and manipulation, transformation and storage of energy, regulation in biological systems, signal transduction, cell function, and the basics of biotechnology. Labs will feature projects in molecular motors, biological detection and storage of electromagnetic energy, and applications of biotechnology to nano-technology. This course is part of a sequence that lays the foundation for the bioengineering program options individual departments will offer.
