We’re moving! We are currently in the process of moving from 170, 177, and 150 Fitzpatrick Hall to our new location in the Engineering Library. The new space will feature 38 workstations running RHEL5 and 7 workstations running Windows 7, as well as a scanner supported by the library. The computers with Linux are still running Windows XP virtual machines; however, *we will no longer support software updates in the virtual machines*. Please excuse any inconveniences! Note: for new users, the procedure for using the Windows virtual machines is reproduced below.
If you need help in the Engineering Library cluster, look for Cluster Consultants, wearing yellow shirts and with a CONSULTANT sign on their desk. For more information on their availability, see the help section.
The Cushing 303 lab now features 32 pairs of computers— one running Windows 7 and one running RHEL 5—linked by a single monitor. To switch between the two, just hit the small KVM switch next to the monitor.
Please note: do not shut down the Linux workstations so they can be accessed remotely, for example for maintenance. Also, they are in Condor pool, a facility to utilize idle CPUs which includes Notre Dame, Purdue, and Wisconsin, so there will not be an issue of energy waste.
The help desk email has been simplified! For both Linux and Windows problems please send your emails to help@esc.nd.edu. To expedite the solution, please describe your problem and add relevant information such as the name and location of the computer, the command you type or icon you click, and any error message you get.
As was the case last year, *remote1* and *remote2* are once again available for jobs via ssh. Since computers in the cluster prioritize users on the console, users attempting to ssh to occupied cluster computers may find themselves kicked out. To avoid this, users may ssh to remote1.helios.nd.edu or remote2.helios.nd.edu. Typically, these remote servers are used by students who need to edit, compile, and run small programs for their classwork when they can't log in on a console in the cluster. We only ask that you avoid executing long jobs (anything over an hour). For long jobs, such as research simulations, the users should use the facility provided by CRC (Center of Research Computing). Abusers of remote1 and remote2 may be banned from using them.
As a reminder, each user is allotted a 1,000 black and white page quota each semester. Printing a color page costs the equivalent of printing 5 black and white pages. Please do not abuse your printing privileges! The printing service is provided by ESC to facilitate research and academic endeavors.
The AFS quota is still in place. If users are getting kicked out of their AFS accounts after 10 seconds logging in, they should request an increased AFS Quota by visiting http://oit.nd.edu/helpdesk/quotarequest.shtml or the OIT Helpdesk at 128 DeBartolo Hall.
Also, as the Windows virtual machines are unchanged from last year, the procedure for enabling them is the same:
1. Log into Linux
2. Right click and Open Terminal
3. Type /etc/vmware/vmware_first_time
4. Double click the Windows XP icon
5. Select Local Host and click Connect
* Returning users may skip to step 3.
To return to Linux, simply press Shift+Alt or Ctrl+Alt. IMPORTANT: when you are done, log out of BOTH Windows AND Linux. Failure to log out from either one will compromise your account security!
