Installing Programs on Windows
Want to install programs on your personal computer so you can get work done on the go? It's easier than you think. These instructions are for Windows XP SP3 and for Windows Vista, and for students only. Adobe ReaderAdobe Reader reads PDF files. This installation requires a reboot, so save any open work first. Go to Adobe's website. On the right-hand side of the page, click Get Adobe Reader.
On the next page, uncheck Free Google Toolbar, and click Download.
If no download window pops up after you click Download, check the top of the window for a gold bar that says "This site may require the following ActiveX control."
Click on that, then click "Install ActiveX control." When the security warning appears, click Install. The Adobe Download Manager will open and show installation progress.
After installation is finished, click Close Download Manager. OpenAFS and KerberosOpenAFS is a file server application, and Kerberos is a manager for it. Follow the OIT's guide here to install. RobolabRobolab is an application for programming LEGO Mindstorms robots. Borrow a Robolab CD for Window from Engineering Library. Insert the Robolab CD. Setup will start automatically in XP. On Vista, You'll see this screen:
Click Install. The first window is a Welcome window. Click Next. The next window is Important Notes. Click Next. The next window is a license agreement. Click Yes. Now choose the directory to install Robolab in, or stay with the default. Click Next. Next, name the Start Menu Robolab folder and click Next, decide not to have a Start Menu folder and click Skip This, or stay with the defaults and click Next. Now it is ready to install; click Next. Before installation starts, you will be prompted for a serial number.
Use the number that came with your disk and click OK. Robolab will start installing, and there will be additional components to install afterward. You are asked to press OK to install the USB Tower driver files. Click OK. You will immediately get a message saying that the driver installed successfully. Click OK. Next is installation of WinVDIG. Click Yes when you asked whether you want to install WinVDIG. An installation wizard will open. Click Next. Next is a license agreement. Click Yes to accept it. The next window is information. Click Next. Now choose the directory to install WinVDIG in, or stay with the default. Click Next. Next, name the Start Menu Robolab folder or go with the default. Click Next. Now confirm the installation by clicking Install. When finished, unselect Launch WinVDIG test, then click Finish. The next installation is Quicktime 7.0. If Quicktime 7.0 or greater wasn't found on your computer, you will get a message saying so. Click OK. Robolab installation will now finish. Click Close. Close the Windows Explorer window that opens. Eject the disk
Now you have to apply a patch (update) to Robolab. Go here. Once the page opens, choose Easy Installer in the PC column.
A file download window will appear, asking whether you want to open or save the download. Click Save, and save it in any folder. Locate the folder you saved the download in and open it. Inside will be a zipped file. Right-click on it and click Extract All. The extraction wizard will appear. Click Next. Leave the extraction point as default (the same folder the zipped folder is located in) and click Next. After extraction is done, click Finish. The folder with the patch executable will open. Double-click on it to run it. You will get a security warning popup. Click Run. The patch setup will start with a Welcome window. Click Next. The next window is Important Notes. Click Next. The next window is a license agreement. Click Yes. The next window asks you to locate the folder in which Robolab is in. If you went with the default installation location for Robolab, the default for the Robolab patch is the correct one. Click Next. Setup is now ready. Click Next.
When setup is complete, click Close. Close out of any stray windows. Instuctions included in the Robolab documentation files: 1. Insert the ROBOLAB CD into the computer. The CD window ProEngineer Wildfire 4ProE is a 3D CAD Application. Insert the Pro/Engineer disk. A Windows Explorer window will open. Open the ProE folder, then open the disk1 folder.
Run setup.exe. A window will open with the Pro/Engineer logo. Click Next. The next window is a license agreement. Accept it and click Next.
From the menu, click on Pro/Engineer & Pro/Engineer Mechanica. In the next window, click on the Product Features icon and select Install all sub-features.
Click Next. Now you must add a license server.
In the window that pops up, leave the default type of license server as single license server. In the Hostname dialogue box type ndlicense.nd.edu, and in the Port dialogue box type 7789. Click OK. Click Next. The next window allows you to change some preferences. Change whatever you need to and click Next. The Next window is optional configuration; do not select anything. Click Install. When it asks for CDROM 2, there will be a box with a filename in it. Delete the 1 from "disk1" and replace with a 2.
Continue this process until you finish. You will then get a popup about installing Java if you don't have it already. Click Accept. Java will install quickly and click Finish. This returns you to the Pro/Engineer. Wait until it says Installation Complete. Then click Next. Click Exit to exit the Pro/Engineer menu. SAP2000 v14SAP2000 is a structural analysis program. Borrow a SAP2000 CD for Windows from Engineering Library. Insert the SAP2000 CD. On XP, some files will be extracted as soon as you do this. On Vista, you'll have to go to My Computer, right-click the SAP2000 disk, click Explore, and then right-click the Setup icon and click, "Run as administrator".
After this, the installation wizard will start. Click Next. The next window is a license agreement. Accept it and click Next.
The next window asks for personal information. Enter your username and the organization as University of Notre Dame. Click Next.
The next window asks you to choose the directory in which to install the software. Choose the directory you want, or stay with the default, and click Next. The wizard is now ready to install SAP2000. Click Install. When installation finishes, click Finish. Eject the SAP2000 disk. MiKTeXMiKTeX is a text compiler. Download MiKTeX. A security window will appear, asking whether you want to run or save the download. If you want to have access to the installer at a later time, click Save; otherwise, click Run. Another security warning will appear. Click Run. The MiKTeX installer will open with a license agreement. Accept it and click Next.
Next, you can choose whether you want other accounts to be able to use MiKTeX, or just your account. Make your decision and click Next. The next window asks you to choose an installation directory. Choose one, or stay with the default, and click Next. Now you have you select some basic settings. In the dropdown labeled Preferred paper, select letter, and leave the other dropdown as default.
The next window is confirmation; click Start.
After installation finishes, click Next, then click Close. PuTTYPuTTY is a Linux terminal emulator. Download from here. A security warning pops up; click Save. Save it to your Desktop.
If the Download complete window remains after the download, click Close.
You don't need to "install" PuTTY. It's a self contained program, so just keep it on your desktop. MATLABMATLAB is used for mathematical analysis. Follow OIT's guide here to get MATLAB on your PC. (You'll need to sign in with your NetID). IMPORTANT: Before you follow the OIT's guide, please read on. Instead of downloading the software, you can borrow the DVD for Windows from Engineering Library. If you borrow the DVD, skip the "Download the software" section of the OIT's guide, but you must copy the files from the DVD to your hard disk before continuing with "Install the software" section. Microsoft Office 2007Office is used for creating documents, essays, and presentations. For office, you'll need a disk. Purchase one at the Notre Dame Computer Store. Insert it, then wait for installation files to be copied to the computer, and enter the product key. Click Next. Enter your name, initials , and the organization as University of Notre Dame. Click Next. Accept the license agreement and click Next. Choose the typical install and click Next. Then press install. Once the installation is finished, click Finish. Do not delete the installation files. Microsoft SyncToy 2.0SyncToy requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. If you have .NET Framework 2.0, skip the asterisked paragraph. *Go to this site. Click the Download button. A security window will appear, asking whether you want to run or save the download. If you want to have access to the installer at a later time, click Save; otherwise, click Run. Another security warning will appear. Click Run. The setup window will appear. Click Next. Next is the license agreement. Accept it and click Install. When installation finishes, click Finish. Now, to install SyncToy, you'll need this installer. Click Download files below, then click the Download button to the right of SyncToySetupPackage.exe.
A security window will appear, asking whether you want to run or save the download. If you want to have access to the installer at a later time, click Save; otherwise, click Run. Another security warning will appear. Click Run. First, you must install Sync Framework. The window that pops up is the license agreement for Sync Framework. Click Accept. Now the SyncToy installation wizards appears. Check the box saying I have read and understand the warning above, then click Next.
Now the license agreement for SyncToy. Accept it and click Next.
Next, choose the installation folder, and whether you want to install for everyone on your computer, or just your account. Make these decisions and click Next. Now confirm the install by clicking Next.
After installation finishes, click Close. Xming X ServerX Server lets you use your Windows PC as a Linux client, among other things. Go to http://straightrunning.com/XmingNotes/. Scroll down, and under Releases, under Public Domain Releases, click on "Xming".
Wait for a download window to appear. If it takes more than 30 seconds, at the top right of the window, click on direct link located in the text "Please use this direct link or try another mirror."
A security window will appear, asking whether you want to run or save the download. If you want to have access to the installer at a later time, click Save; otherwise, click Run.
Another security warning will appear. Click Run.
A setup window will open, welcoming you. Click next. Now choose the directory to install Xming in, or stay with the default. Click Next. The next window allows you to choose which components to install. Leave the default as Full installation and click Next.
Next, name the Start Menu Xming folder, decide not to have a Start Menu folder by checking the box Don't create a Start Menu folder, or stay with the default Start Menu folder. Click Next. The next window allows you to select additional tasks. Check the box that says Create a desktop icon for XLaunch. Leave any other defaults and click Next.
The next window is confirmation, click Install. When installation finishes, uncheck the box that says Launch Xming. Click Finish.
