About ESC

Engineering and Science Computing (ESC) provides technical assistance and consultation services to faculty, staff and students in the Colleges of Engineering and Science.

ESC provides these services in three ways:
1. Tier 2 Help Desk support. For those issues that cannot be resolved by OIT's (Tier 1) Help Desk, ESC encourages users to send email to help@esc.nd.edu and describe the problem. A Client Support Consultant/Analyst will contact the user to troubleshoot the problem.
2. Full Technology Life Cycle Management. The ESC team provides standard computer installations for WIndows, Mac OS X, and Linux (Red Hat, Debian). ESC also provides Linux technical support for Red Hat and Debian variants (Ubuntu, CentOS and Fedora). ESC defines Technology Life Cycle as all stages from initial consultation, to ordering equipment through the Procurement Office, initial software installation, maintenance, through final disposal of equipment at the end of tis operational life cycle. Technology Life Cycle Management also includes audiovisual support of non-Registrar controlled classrooms and conference rooms.
3. Operations and Engineering Support. ESC is currently investigating various technologies to support virtualized infrastructure services in two areas: Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI) and Virtual Private Servers (VPS). The intent of VDI is to drive down the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for maintenance and sustainment of individual workstations in administrative and public computing areas maintained by ESC. ESC is working with OIT, the office of the VP of Finance and the Sustainability Office to study the feasibility of VDI in reducing operating costs. ESC is also investigating the use of VPS to provide needed enterprise level services (for web and database servers) to interested faculty, centers and institutes in the Colleges of Engineering and Science. ESC will not operate a separate email server for users.
