Kim’s areas of specialization include development economics (with special focus on East Asia, Africa and Latin America); international trade and finance; and income distribution and poverty. He has occasionally served as an economic consultant for governments of developing countries and for international agencies.

His career includes four years as a Rockefeller Foundation scholar in Kenya and Tanzani; two years as a senior economist with US Agency for International Development; a semester at Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Mexico, Maastricht School of Management, and American Graduate School of Business in Arizona; a year as a Monbusho scholar at Hitotsubashi Institute of Economic Research in Tokyo; and short stints as a researcher and consultant at East-West Center in Hawaii, Hudson Institute, UNIDO in Vienna, National Productivity Center in Singapore, and Nacional Financiera in Mexico. He has published a dozen books and extensively in over fifty professional journals in the areas of development studies, international economics, and quantitative analysis.

His published books include Papers on the Political Economy of Tanzania (Heineman), Korean Agricultural Research: the Integration of Reseach and Extension (USAID),Debt and Development in Latin America (Notre Dame), Politica Industrial y Dessarrollo en Corea del Sur (Nacional Financiera), Estrategias de Desarrollo para el Futuro de Me´xico (ITESO), The State, Markets and Development (Edward Elgar), Acquiring, Adapting, and Developing Technologies: Lessons from the Japanese Experience (Macmillan & St. Martin's), Trade and Industrialization (Netherlands Institute for International Management), Economic and Corporate Restructuring: Experiences and Challenges of the Decade (Lansa Press) and Economic Cooperation and Integration: East Asian Experience (Kellogg Institute), El Ecuador en el Mercado Mundial (Quito: Corporacion Editora Nacional), Growth, Distribution and Political Change:Asia and the Wider World (Macmillan). Currently, he serves as a co-editor of Macmilan Press Academic series on the Korean Economy. He has received numerous awards for professional achievements from various organizations including the United States Agency for International Development, the World Academy of Development and Cooperation, Korea-America Economic Association, Universidad Nacional Autonamo de Mexico, and recently the International Society for Intercommunications of New Ideas.
