Guidelines for Internship Approval
Internships are a valuable tool to enhance an academic portfolio, however academic credit will not be rewarded for work experience alone. Credit will be rewarded based on the academic component inspired by the participation in the internship. The following guidelines outline the procedures you will need to follow in order to gain academic credit for unpaid internships completed during the academic year or over the summer.

  • In order to apply for an Arts and Letters internship, students must be enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters.
  • Prior approval is necessary from the Office for Undergraduate Studies, 101 O'Shaughnessy, to ensure proper credit transfer.
  • All internships for credit are unpaid.
We encourage you to come meet with a Dean to discuss your plans for receiving credit for an academic internship.

Goals and Objectives Statement
Please write a brief statement (200 words) outlining the nature of the work you will be performing. Please list at least three specific goals and objectives you wish to meet with this internship. What do you expect to gain from this experience? These objectives will be reevaluated in your final essay before credit is granted.

Academic Requirements
Upon completion of the internship, you are required to write a final essay (5-7 pages in length) reflecting upon your original goal and objectives. What insights did you gain from this experience? Please describe a significant project or your overall work experience and how it contributed to the company, industry, or enterprise as well as to your personal development. While you are working, you will need to keep a daily journal of your internship activities. The paper and journal are due the last class day of the semester if the internship is taken during the academic year, and during the first week of fall semester if the internship is taken during the summer session.

Employer Obligations
Once you find an internship, you will need to submit an offer letter from the person who will act as supervisor. The letter must outline the duties for which you will be responsible and the approximate dates and times you are expected to work. No credit will be granted unless an offer letter is submitted to the office for Undergraduate Studies along with your goals and objectives.

Upon completion of the internship, pleas have your supervisor send a letter of evaluation to the:
Office for Undergraduate Studies
101 O'Shaughnessy
University of Notre Dame
Notre Dame, IN 46556.

Dart into AL 496. If approval is granted, you must obtain an authorization number from the Office of Undergraduate Studies and DART into AL 496. The class will be graded S/U and will be used for elective credit.

Credit for summer internships may be placed on the transcript during the subsequent fall semester, providing you have followed the outline procedures.

Summer Internship Credit: Students must work a total of 80 hours, in no less than three weeks, in order to receive 3 credits. This can be defined as 8 hours per week for 10 weeks or 10 hours per week for 8 weeks, etc.

Semester Internship Credit: 8-10 hours per week for 10 weeks will yield 3 credits; 5-7 hours per week for 10 weeks will yield 2 credits, 3-5 hours per week for 10 weeks will yield 1 credit.
