The main points of the lecture were
- Elementary Statistics and Probability
Goals:
After this lecture you should be able to:
- Work with the basic elements of statistics and probability: expectation
values, mean and variance.
- Know the difference between random and systematic error.
Reading
Questions of the Day:
- You are measuring the concentration of ethanol in wine using a gas
chromatograph. Name two sources of systematic error and two sources of random
error in your measurements.
- What is the probability that the true mean of a measured quantity will lie
more than two standard deviations above the measured mean?
