Cheg 258 - Lecture Notes - Feb. 14, 2000
Announcements
- The assignment for today involves searching out information off of the
internet. If you are not familiar with the search engines on the web, I
recommend you come to tonight's review session!
Class notes
Scanned Notes
The main points of the lecture were
- Singular Value Decomposition
Goals:
After this lecture you should:
- Know how to use singular value decomposition to solve systems of
equations, and to compress data.
Reading
- The class notes and Ch. 6 of Kahaner and Hanna.
Question of the Day:
- Due to roundoff errors, matrices are never perfectly singular. How can we
use singular value decomposition in an algorithm to get "good" answers to such
nearly singular problems?
